Break for Brake Repair

Signs from Your Brakes

Of course, you want to be safe when you drive, and you care about the safety of others, but did you know that you could be held legally liable if you ignore the need for brake repair that leads to an accident?  It’s helpful to know the warning signs that indicate the need for brake service.

Noises

Common indicators include odd noises or feelings when you apply the brakes.  If you hear squealing, squeaking, or grinding during braking, for instance, your car may need brake pads.  The noises are created by the worn pads allowing metal parts to rub together.

Fluid Leak

If you notice a brake fluid leak or your brake pedal seems “soft” or spongy when you apply pressure, you may have a failing or damaged master cylinder.  Brakes work using hydraulic principles.  The master cylinder holds brake fluid which applies force to the brake pads when you depress the pedal.  Your vehicle may not stop–at least not in a reasonable distance–if the master cylinder is allowing fluid to escape.  When this is occurring, you may feel as if your brake pedal is going all the way to the floor.  The pedal should stop one to one and a half inches from the floor if your auto has power brakes, while it should stop at least 3 inches from the floor if the car has manual brakes.

Warning Light

If the brake indicator light is illuminated in the dash panel, the vehicle’s braking system may need either repair or routine maintenance.

Bad Rotors

Wobbling, vibrating, or scraping during braking may point toward a rotor problem.  The rotor is a large metal disc that sits just to the inside of the wheel.  Attached to calipers, the brake pads make contact with the rotors to slow the car when you press the brake pedal.  If the rotors have become uneven, the pads don’t make proper contact with them, impacting stopping distance and ability.  Properly conditioned rotors are evenly thick and smooth.

Burning Smell

If you smell a burning odor, your automobile may have a stuck caliper, or the emergency brake could be engaged (either by accident or oversight).
